Wounded Warrior Project

Throughout the month of July, Nissan of Cookeville your local top quality Nissan dealership will be partnering with the Wounded Warrior Project (WWP). This absolutely amazing project works tirelessly to provide an amazing array of services to those who have been wounded in combat and need help. There are many ways in which we as a dealership, and you as our valued customers can help this great organization.

This month we will be donating $50 dollars for every car we sell directly to the Wounded Warrior Project. This includes every vehicle in our inventory from the fuel efficient Nissan Versa to the powerful and fun to drive all-new Nissan Altima. No matter what vehicle you decide to drive home in, we will donate $50 to the cause.

While this is a good start to doing our part to support those who have given so much to protect the freedoms we all enjoy, there is still more that we can do to help. Throughout the month of July we will also be offering a fantastic selection of Wounded Warrior Project merchandise to our customers. We will be selling this merchandise to our customers at cost, but more importantly 10% of all sales of this merchandise will be donated to the project.

What Is the Wounded Warrior Project?

The Wounded Warrior Project was founded in 2003 thanks to the efforts of John Melia and his family. Melia was severely injured while serving his country during a tour of duty in Somalia when the helicopter he was in crash landed in 1992. The project began with Melia and a group that included family and friends collecting a number of useful items such as socks, t-shirts, underwear, basic hygiene and toiletry items, as well as CD players and CDs, and decks of playing cards for those who had been wounded in combat.

These items were placed in backpacks that the group then distributed to those wounded military members being cared for at Bethesda Naval Center and the Walter Reed Army Medical Center. This simple gesture of compassion still continues to be one of the cornerstones of the project and as of August 2013 had distributed almost 17,000 backpacks.

Programs the Wounded Warrior Project Is Involved In

According to the latest information, the WWP currently offers 20 different services and programs to those who have been wounded in combat and their families. The programs are divided into four very distinct categories, which are “Body”, “Economic Empowerment”, “Engagement”, and “Mind”. Each of these categories is aimed at helping the warrior and his family improve their daily lives in many ways.

Body

The “Body” category offers the original backpack program filled with comfort items. It also includes the Transitional Care Pack program that sends care packages directly to the wounded who are still overseas having been medevac’d to larger treatment facilities. The Soldier Ride is a four day bike ride for the wounded that offers a way for many to overcome the physical, emotional, and mental wounds suffered as a result of combat. There are also a number of physical health programs designed to help maximize a wounded warrior’s independence.

Mind

Aimed specifically at helping those who have been wounded in combat recover from the mental health damage caused by being in combat, this category includes the Combat Stress Recovery Program intended to help with PTSD. Project Odyssey offers a number of outdoor activities designed to help the wounded reconnect with nature as a form of healing. The Restore Warriors website offers a number of self-help techniques and resources to help warriors learn how to cope with and overcome PTSD, depression, and operational/combat stress.

Economic Empowerment

This category offers wounded warriors a number of resources and programs designed to help them meet educational goals, develop new careers, and at the same time bolster both physical and mental health. It also includes the Warriors to Work program, whose main job is to offer career guidance and support for those who are making the transition from a career in the military to one in the civilian world.

Engagement

This program is there to provide long term support for those who need it. This segment sponsors an ever increasing number of events, discounted services, and an online community, all aimed at providing much needed camaraderie for those who have been wounded in combat.

This only a small part of the growing list of services and support programs offered to those who have been wounded in combat by the Wounded Warrior Project. We invite you to help us help them by coming into Nissan of Cookeville during the month of July and purchasing one of the great new Nissan vehicles we have in stock along with a selection of the WPP merchandise we are offering at cost. Join us today in helping to support this truly incredible project and doing our part to support those who fight for our freedom every day.
