Memorial Day is one of the best times of year to get together with friends, participate in some team or individual sports, and enjoy delicious food and drink. However, if you don’t feel like organizing your own event, Cookeville, Tennessee, has a number of activities for all ages. This May, don’t miss the best Memorial Day celebrations in the area. Here are just a few.

Concerts at Dogwood Park

At the Dogwood Performance Pavilion in Dogwood Park, Memorial Day weekend kicks off in style with a free live concert from local bands Merseyside and Legacy. Both bands will perform on Friday, May 27 at 6:30 p.m. On May 30, the Cookeville Community Band will kick off its summer concert series with a Memorial Day evening performance at 7:30 p.m.

Super Cool Funfest

If you’re willing to make the trip to Nashville, it’s well worth it just to go to the Super Cool Funfest. This year’s festival is the perfect event to relive your youth, especially if you were a kid of the 90s. It features a four-square tournament, Space Jam basketball tourney, an MTV Spring Break Dance Party, and a giant Jenga set. There are also food trucks, beer vendors, and live music. Tickets start at just $21.99 and all proceeds benefit the Greenways of Nashville, which is a non-profit organization dedicated to maintaining green public spaces in the city. This event takes place starting at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 28.

Zoo Knoxville: Ride for the Wild Side

As one of the best zoos in Tennessee, Zoo Knoxville put on many events during the year. If you want to become one of the participants of the inaugural Ride for the Wild Side, sign up today. This cycling event is open only to people 21 and up, and features a 10-mile, 30-mile, or 50-mile ride that starts at the zoo and winds its way through eastern Tennessee. Entrance fees are $37.50, but they include a free t-shirt, free parking, free admission to the zoo, and an after party with food and drink. This bike ride helps raise money to continue education and support for the zoo. All races start at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday, May 28, so make sure to arrive early to get all your information and to warm up.

Thrift Emporium

Head down to the Nashville Flea Market on May 27 through May 29 to find some of the best bargains in the state. On the last weekend of each month, the flea market opens its doors, allowing patrons to search the premises for their favorite items. This weekend’s theme just happens to be thrift stores, meaning that everything from furniture to clothing to more obscure items will make an appearance. Admission is free, so drive down to the Nashville Fairgrounds to see if you can find a million dollar item for some pocket change. Make sure to check the opening and closing times, as it varies from day-to-day.

Jammin’ at Hippie Jacks Americana Music Festival

Taking place from May 26 to May 29, the Jammin’ at Hippie Jacks Americana Music Festival features some of the best roots, bluegrass, and folk music from around the country. This event takes place at the Scrappy Town Campgrounds in Crawford, Tennessee, just a short 40-minute drive from Cookeville. Each ticket for the event is $115, but it includes three days of music and camping fees. If hanging out, partying, and listening to music with a bunch of hippies sounds like a fun idea, than this event is definitely for you.

War Memorial Auditorium

There’s no formal schedule or event for the War Memorial Auditorium in Nashville, but it’s a remarkable way to honor the memory of Americans that fell in foreign and domestic wars. Built in 1925, this elegant memorial has two sculptures outside as a lasting homage to Tennesseeans that fought, and it’s a truly awe-inspiring place to visit to remember why you get a long, three-day weekend.

Wine & Swine

If you’re willing to take the two-hour trek to Hampshire, Tennessee, you’ll get a chance to sample some of the best food and drink in the state. Located on the grounds of the Natchez Hills Winery, the Swine & Wine event features the vineyards award-winning wines, as well as some delicious barbecue. This is a family friendly event, so don’t hesitate to round-up the whole family for a day of great food, drink, and live music. Tickets for this Sunday, May 29 event are only $15.
