Nissan XTRONIC CVT Engine

The Nissan XTRONIC CVT is a transmission that is now used in many of their vehicles. CVT stands for Continuously Variable Transmission. It is a transmission that is essentially seamless and you do not feel any of the “steps” when it is changing gears. This new generation transmission is designed for 1.5-2.0-liter displacement engines. It has improved fuel economy by up to 10% when you compare it to the standard CVT and it also gives more of a direct drive.

The Difference Technology Makes

The CVT transmission is a stepless system that is not often seen. When compared to other traditional transmission systems such as the Manual Trasmission (MT) or the Automatic Transmission (AT), the difference felt while driving is significant. The CVT is set to automatically choose the right transmission gear ration without taking those “steps.” In addition to that, it can even run the most efficient engine rpm at regular velocity. This design provides performance that is smooth even when changing shifts or accelerating or decelerating. Because the ration range from high to low gears is expanded, it creates a reduction in friction. This allows for the 10% improvement on fuel economy.

How to Technology Works

Within the CVT, the width between the two pulleys has been adjusted. This changes the arc of the radius of the steel belt that runs between them. All of this allows for better control of the transmission gear ratio. The steel belt is in place to pull the two pulleys together to change the diameter based on the speeds. The benefit of this new design is that when the gear ratio is at a lower gear and continues to go lower, then the acceleration will continue to improve. This essentially gives more power to starting in first gear than you would have by starting in second and will improve vehicle response at low speed starts. On the other side, with the gear ratio is at a higher gear, then the rotation of the engine is decreased. This provides better fuel combustion and even less noise than other transmissions would provide. To help with the new design, Nissan has added a more narrow pulley axle as well as a new belt. Altogether, this expands the transmission gear ratio range. Before, it was at a 6.0 and now it is at a global top level of 7.0.

Overall, the new XTRONIC CVT provides a much smoother drive. It also provides adaptive shift control that can interpret the intentions of the driver in many ways such as the acceleration to steering. This helps provide the optimum shift control. This new type of system really takes driving to the next level because it provides a transmission system that has never been experienced before in the market. It provides smoother transition as well as the optimal fuel consumption performance.
